The Fishing Ritual in the South

On the Andalusian coast, where the sea and the light are in constant dialogue, fishing is part of the natural rhythm of life. In towns such as Conil de la Frontera, Barbate and Sanlúcar de Barrameda, each day begins before dawn: boats heading out into the still-dark horizon, nets spread out on the quay, expert hands patiently mending them whilst the scent of salt and damp wood heralds the start of a new day.

The jewels of the Marinero collection are born from this attentive gaze upon the life of the sea. From the fleeting brilliance of fish freshly arrived in port, whose scales catch the light in brief flashes. From the leisurely movement of the nets as they are spread out and gathered in, tracing organic patterns that have been repeated for generations. From the ropes and shells that appear amongst the catch, small traces of the ocean accompany the fishermen’s daily work.

In this very landscape of boats, nets and reflections, Joaquín Sorolla found in Ayamonte a creative territory where fishing, light and movement were transformed into painting: wet canvases stretched out in the sun, nets taut in the sailors’ hands and bodies bent over the sand whilst the sea continued to breathe in the background.

The sea thus becomes a visual language. The nets trace delicate geometric patterns, invisible currents chart their course, and the shells hold the memory of the ocean within their form. From this universe emerge fluid, enveloping silhouettes—lines that evoke the lightness of water and the rhythm of the tides.

The sheen of the silver recalls the soft glow of the waves at dawn and the reflection that lingers as the boats slowly return to port. It is a vivid, subtle and shifting sheen, like the foam as it breaks. As in the verses of Rafael Alberti, the sea here is not merely a landscape, but memory, craft and a constant heartbeat.

The forms of the collection pay tribute to this maritime imagery and celebrate the living essence of the sea: the net that gathers, the light reflected in the scales, the calm that follows a day’s fishing. A tribute to that silent, ancestral world which now lives on in every piece.
